THE FOLK MUSIC AND FOLK DANCE WEEKEND

The first Folk Music and Folk Dance Weekend in Suldal was held in 1990 and has since become an annual tradition. The course, which is held every fall at Mo Salmon farm, is open to participants of all ages and level of skill. The instructors are among the best performers in their fields. The social aspect is also very important for the continued success of the course weekend. Courses are held in playing the Hardanger fiddle or the willow flute, and in singing of lays. CONCERTS

The Folk Music Archive arranges several concerts every year with support from, among others, the Arts Council Norway. The concerts vary greatly – from family concerts to concerts with traditional musicians from other countries and concerts with Norwegian musicians. Some concerts are traditional while others cross a borderline to other styles. The buildings at Ryfylkemuseet contain many excellent locations offering good, atmospheric settings for such concerts, in which music of high quality is performed and the public is drawn close to the musicians.

BYGDA DANSAR

The folk dance project “Bygda dansar” (The countryside’s dancing) will be carried out in Rogaland County between 2016 and 2019. This project focusses on young people of 15 to 19 years of age. It is arranged in the various counties in cooperation with local musicians.

“Bygda dansar” has been financed by the Ministry of Culture and Rogaland County Municipality with grants totaling NOK 3.45 million. The Norwegian Center for Folk Music and Dance administers the project with the Folk Music Archive for Rogaland County as a partner.

The project aims to boost folk-dancing as a cultural heritage form, an artistic expression and a type of social life that links local folk-music more firmly to dancing. Another goal concerns the stimulation of dancing as a social and business activity in the region.
